Dr. Michael L. Unger

International Economic Development Expert

Dr. Michael Unger is currently Executive-in-Residence and Associate Professor of Management and International Business in the Sellinger School of Business, Loyola College in Maryland. Dr. Unger is a senior economist with extensive experience in the areas of international trade, finance, investment, global competitiveness and macroeconomic reform.  He has more than 25 years of professional experience working in more than 30 developing countries around the world. Dr. Unger’s skills and experience supports the analyses to develop a deeper understanding of the economic consequences of climate change on issues of trade, energy and agriculture.

In addition to his current academic appointment at Loyola College, Dr. Unger has been involved with several universities throughout his career. He has taught International Business and International Finance at George Washington University and American University; served as a Visiting Associate Professor of International Business for Strathmore Business School in Nairobi, Kenya; and currently serves as a Senior Institute Associate for Harvard Business School’s Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness.

Professionally, Dr. Unger served as USAID’s representative to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), was the Senior Sdvisor to the Chairman of OPIC’s Board of Directors, and was the Chief Economist in the Bureau for Private Enterprise and was Director of Private Sector Development, Bureau for Africa. Dr. Unger also worked in the private sector, where he served as Principal Associate of Nathan Associates, Inc.

Dr. Unger is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University where he earned his PhD in International Business and Economics; Washington University of St. Louis where he earned his Master of Arts in Economics; and Ohio State University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences. Dr. Unger has also earned a Program for Management Development from Harvard Business School.
